Capricious spring pictures from Sorrento

2013-02-11

Spring is just around the corner, but even now, in late winter and the early spring that often follows in February, when Mount Vesuvius is sometimes covered with a light snow blanket ... the lush plants in Sorrento take center stage, against a backdrop of extraordinarily clear, nitid and winter colors on the Coast.
From my sheltered spot under the bamboo one can see Mount Vesuvius just across the Bay of Naples, and you can also take in its snow cap.
The wind quickly chases away the clouds, and the sea gulls take advantage of their viewpoint on the glass roof
But soon again, clouds come in again from the South: this is Sorrento's Marina Piccola in February, with its extraordinary colors and lights just after a storm. Across the sea we should be able to see Ischia, but not today
You can see the difference of these pictures compared to the mild spring air later on, when in March and April the colors of the sky get more limpid and at the same time less accentuated.
Watching these pictures, you cannot notice the passing and changing of seasons: Here are pansies surrounding all sorts of palm trees and yuccas
The Sorrento garden is now adorned with yellow and crimson pansies - le violette as we call them in Italian. In about four to five weeks from now, we will be in for a surprise - with flowers and colors bursting.
In the midst of lemons, mandarines and oranges, their playful color spots breath in spring and sun
